Likely you've heard about short term health insurance on the news and it wasn't in a good way. Sure, short term health has different limitations and exclusions but the fact is, it looks eerily similar to health insurance prior to ACA guidelines in most cases.
Short term health insurance is great for someone between jobs, waiting for their new benefits to kick in. Or for young healthy folks who don't qualify for subsidies on the Marketplace but still need some kind of health insurance. And at roughly half the cost of ACA plans, it certainly helps with the budget.
Short Term Health Insurance plans are typically sold in 3 or 6 month benefit periods. You can often stack these plans to make them last closer to a year but keep in mind that your deductible starts over with each benefit period. New plans introduced for 2021 can last for almost three years when looking at 3 consecutive terms. There are maximums per benefit period and you can be declined due to pre-existing conditions or an undesirable height/weight ratio. Preventative screenings and prescription meds are sometimes not covered. If they aren't, you can pretty easily get a limited med program to cover those and still save money.
Certainly not the answer for everyone but Short Term Health Plans definitely have their place in the market.
A Limited Med Program is essentially coverage to fill the gaps left by your health insurance or sharing plan. Many HDHP (High Deductible Health Plans) make you pay out of pocket for doctors visits and prescriptions until you have met your deductible. And nearly all sharing programs leave the responsibility for wellness and routine visits on you. A limited health plan can cover those wellness screenings, routine doctor visits, and prescription costs for you while still saving you money over a higher PPO plan.
Ever hear the saying "The eyes are the windows to the soul"? Well, in some ways they are! Regular dental and vision screenings can alert you to serious medical concerns you didn't even know you had. And we all know that catching chronic conditions early is the key to quick recovery and lower health bills.
We offer Dental & Vision Insurance through a variety of carriers based on your needs. They can be purchased separately or together. But if you want the best options, sign up BEFORE you need it! Very few plans offer root canals and crowns covered from Day 1 and Day 1 is usually the first of the month anyway. We offer one plan that offers full benefits on Day 1 and one that offers partial benefits on Day 1. Just keep in mind the plan offering full benefits on Day 1 has a very limited network and you must sign a 12 month commitment to enroll.
If you need a crown tomorrow, it's probably too late to get help. Luckily, the cost of Dental and Vision Insurance is easily recouped through your wellness exams and some basic services so you probably won't be out of pocket much when buying a policy. And it will sure come in handy when you DO need the major work.
Dental plans typically have an annual maximum between $1000-$2000. Preventative services such as checkups and screenings are usually covered 100% from Day 1 of the policy. Basic services including fillings and extractions are typically covered from 50%-80% after the policy has been in force for 3-6 months. And major services are typically covered at 50% after 12 months. Know the coverage you are buying. Periodontics and Endodontics may be in Basic or Major Services so check for that too. And most plans have a $50 deductible or so.
